Why do virgin media suck (for lack of a better word)?

  • Im so annoyed with them right now. I pay between £50 and £70 a month on crap, its meant to be a 3 for £30 deal.
    I dont get"up to" 10mb broadband speed, in fact most of the time its between 1.5mb and 3.5mb.It always cuts out constantly after midnight too.
    As for the tv well i could buy a digibox for £30 and get exactly the same as what they supply.My daughter has lost the smartcard and they want £50 for a new one!
    So i called them to complain.I was gonna go with sky for tv and keep broadband and phone with virgin but have a moan about the broadband too.Turns out it would be dearer to do that they want £45 for just the broadband and phone and they blamed the internet speed and cut outs on it being a "busy" area where i live.As an existing and loyal customer i got ignored and nothing more was said or offered.Also why is it that new customers get all the privileges and i get crap? They cant even get direct debits right!
    A lot of people i know are unhappy with their service, they have complained and been offered better deals by virgin.
    I cant really threaten them that i'll leave because it seems there isnt really any better deals out there and it seems to cost more to split up your services with separate providers.
    What are your thoughts on virgin media? Have they caused you any problems and what did you do about it? Also, any ideas on what i could try?

  • I have no problem at all with Virgin i get 8Mb out of ten.I am in a very high use area Bournemouth. By the way Sky broadband is dead slow as it comes through BT wire lines.

  • No they've been great with us that's probably because my mother scares them. When the Sky channels were taken off a few years ago, my mother phoned and complained telling them they should sort out their differences and that they were losing customers because of it but she got sympathetic and said she didn't want to go back to Sky and we ended up with the XL TV package completely free for 6 months.
    She also complained about their policy of cutting the broadband on heavy internet users and as she sometimes works from home she needs the internet 7 or 8 hours a day. They upgraded us to 10mb free of charge.
    They just need to be told in no certain terms that they have to beg for your subscription and you end up with loads of freebies.
    Sky is so much more dearer than Virgin. We have the XL TV package, we're going to get the Pay-per-view Sky channels and it will still cost less than Sky. We pay in the region of £40 a month for XL TV, L broadband and phone. You just have to be more demanding with them but don't lose your temper, just say you are a loyal customer. My mother always spins them her 'But I don't want to switch to Sky, I had a bad experience with their customer services' and within 5 minutes they've taken control of the TV or broadband and upgraded it. You won't find better out there. If you're still not happy try the Freeview and Top-up TV services, they have the same channels as Virgin's cheapest TV package.
    And don't be fooled by the Sky bundle offers. There's more small print in that deal than the writing in War and Peace. £25 for the first three months and then normal prices resume and believe me you'll be paying more for Sky than you ever did for Virgin.
    But we're happy being Virgin Media customers and I doubt that my mother would switch to Sky anyday soon.


  • Sorry to hear about your bad experience with virgin media, I actually work for them, the reason for your bad connection is that the UBR needs updating, there are too many people trying to access it, I hope it gets updated soon. Plus telewest were no better I use to work for them they was just the same, all virgin did was rebrand, I have the internet and I not saying this because I work for them but I find it has been the best,


  • yes aparently they do cancel your account with them and go with someone else I'm with vodafone and they do great deals

  • threaten to leave virgin media free on 150 from your Virgin phone explain the reason why and you can do things cheaper through sky tv and you will change all your services to sky as sky are doing a better deal at the moment three tv phone broadband fo £26 plus sky movies go to www.sky.com for more details
