Need a little Diagnostic help?

  • Currently my computer won't start up. Not sure exactly which component is giving me trouble. I think i might be the motherboard.

    Anyway, i took my computer apart to swap out some fans. And now it won't start up anymore.

    Here's the situation. I have just minimal parts hooked up. Just to see if it will even turn on. I have the CPU and motherboard powered and thats it. When i turn on my power supply, the light on the switch turns on. But the power light on the motherboard won't come on. And nothing happens when i press the power button. I have checked all the cables and connections and they are all good. Pretty much i'm getting no power to the motherboard.

    Trying to figure out if its the PSU, CPU, motherboard, or possibly the cables from the case. I would replace and try different parts, but i don't have any of these parts laying around.

    I'm thinking i might have shorted my motherboard. Would this be the scenario if it is? Could my CPU still be good? Or is it possibly fried too?

    Just want to know what people might think. Thanks.


  • Most likely the motherboard is bad, you must be very careful when working on internal components. You would need to test out a known working power supply first. If that works then you know the PSU is bad, if it doesn't work then you'll know the mobo is bad. Don't replace the mobo unless you know what you're doing and can find a replacement at a decent price.

  • The same thing happened to me. I Just bought a new computer, beacuse this is what happened to your computer. Something happened to the power supply, and it went down to the motherboard, and now, to fix this, it will cost you a whole bunch. I wouldnt believe this at first, but when i took it to the computer expert, thats what was up. So I feel sorry for you. Good luck on deciding what you're going to do...
